Francis T. Ferraro, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Prior to joining the Back and Neck Center of Butler Memorial Hospital, Dr. Francis Ferraro was chairman of the neurological surgery department at St. Francis Medical Center. He has worked in private practice for 20 years and is the newest member of Allegheny General Hospital Neurosurgery.

Dr. Ferraro received a bachelor of science degree from Tufts University, a medical degree from Temple University and did his internship and residency at the University of Maryland Hospital.

Dr. Ferraro is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons. Dr. Ferraro’s chief areas of interest include degenerative disorders of the spine, disc surgery, spinal cord tumors, brain tumors, image-guided surgery, stereotacticsurgery and micro-neurosurgery.


Patrick Philip Flannagan, M.D.

In addition to practicing at the Back and Neck Center of Butler Memorial Hospital, Dr. Flannagan has been a part of the neurosurgical department of Allegheny General Hospital since 2000, following an internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and a residency at Allegheny General Hospital.

He is a graduate of Boston College and the Medical College of Pennsylvania, and is a faculty member of the Drexel University School of Medicine, Western Regional Campus.

Dr. Flannagan is board certified in neurological surgery. His research includes neurological injury in athletes, traumatic lumbar fractures and treatment of chronic subdural hematoma in the elderly.


James E. Wilberger, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S.

In addition to practicing at the Back and Neck Center of Butler Memorial Hospital, Dr. Wilberger is professor and chairman of neurosurgery and director of the neurosurgical residency training program at Allegheny General Hospital. He also directs neurosurgery for the West Penn Allegheny Health System and serves as co-director of its comprehensive epilepsy program.

He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and completed his residency and internship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospitals before joining the faculty of the Drexel University School of Medicine, Western Regional Campus.

Dr. Wilberger is nationally recognized for his ongoing work to improve the treatment and outcomes of spinal cord and head trauma. He has published more than 100 articles, 65 book chapters and four neurosurgical textbooks.


Donald M. Whiting, M.D., M.S., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Donald Whiting is a nationally recognized expert in deep brain stimulation. He has been named one of “America’s Top Doctors” by his peers four times in this decade and was included in “Guide to America’s Top Surgeons” in 2006.

In addition to providing high-quality care at the Back and Neck Center of Butler Memorial Hospital, he is vice-chairman of Allegheny General Hospital’s Department of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Whiting received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, interned at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, did his residency in neurosurgery at Cleveland Clinic, and a fellowship in neurotrauma at Allegheny General. He was chief resident of neurosurgery at Cleveland Clinic before returning to Allegheny General Hospital in 1991.
